Chapter 12 GoMath

In chapter 12 we will be learning about both customary and metric units of length, weight/mass, and liquid volume.  We will also find elapsed time and learn to compute with mixed measures.  There are eleven sections in this chapter.

Important Chapter Vocabulary
1.  cup;  A customary unit used to measure liquid volume.
2.  decimeter;  A metric unit for measuring length or distance
3.  fluid ounce;  The smallest customary unit for measuring liquid volume.
4.  gallon;  A customary unit used to measure liquid volume.
5.  half gallon;  A customary unit used to measure liquid volume.
6.  line plot;  A graph that shows the frequency of data along a number line.
7.  milliliter;  A metric unit used to measure liquid volume.
8.  millimeter;  A metric unit used to measure length
9.  ounce;  A customary unit used to measure weight.
10.  pint;  A customary unit used to measure liquid volume.
11.  pound;  A customary unit used to measure weight.
12.  quart; A customary unit used to measure liquid volume.
13.  second;  A small unit of time.
14.  ton;  A customary unit used to measure weight.
15.  benchmark measurement;  A reference which you can measure by.

GoMath Chapter 13

We are skipping chapter 12 for now and moving on to chapter 13.  We will come back to 12 after chapter 13.  In chapter 13 we will be learning about perimeter and area.  We will explore the concept that area is a measure of how many square units cover a flat surface. We will also learn the formula for finding the area of a rectangle.

Important Chapter Vocabulary
1.  Area;  The number of square units needed to cover a flat surface.
2.  Base;  Any side of a two-dimensional figure
3.  Formula;  A set of symbols that expresses a mathematical rule.
4.  Height;  The measure of a perpendicular from the base to the top of a two-dimensional figure.
5.  Perimeter;  The distance around a figure.
6.  Square Unit;  A unit of area with dimensions of 1 unit x 1 unit.

Formula for perimeter of a rectangle;   (2 x length) + (2 x width) =

                                                          (2 x 7) + (2 x 3) = ?
                                                             14   +   6 =   20
                                                               perimeter = 20

Formula for perimeter of a square;  (4 x one side) =

                                                                (4 x 4) = 16
                                                             perimeter = 16

Formula for area;  (base x height)

                                            (7 units x 4 units) = 28 square units
                                                         area = 28 square units

GoMath Chapter 11

In our geometry unit we are moving on to learning more about angles and angle measures.  We will also learn to use a protractor to measure and draw angles.  There are five sections in this chapter.

Important Chapter Vocabulary
1.  Clockwise;  In the same direction in which the hands of a clock move.
2.  Counterclockwise; In the opposite direction in which the hands of a clock move.
3.  Degree;  The unit used for measuring angles.
4.  Protractor;  A tool used for measuring the size of an angle.
